Tips for Teachers on How to Manage Time Effectively

Effective time management for teachers is a glue that holds their classroom and coursework together. Managing your time and that of your students is a challenge, but one that will ultimately lead you into a streamlined routine that leaves you and your students prepared and fulfilled.

Teachers have so much on their plate that having ways to manage their time efficiently can make or break a successful school day, week or semester. Here are some of the best time management tips for teachers who work hard and deserve time enough to breathe and reflect on a day well done.

Tip #1: Prioritize Your Daily and Weekly Goals

Figuring out and setting into motion your daily and weekly goals can help prioritize your workload, organize your day and keep you on track, even when the unexpected occurs and the workload can seem overwhelming.

Arranging your workload based on importance as well as impact of the completed tasks on the class and the lesson. If the projects do not yield the results you wish, then make sure you have a backup plan as you shelf that one.

Tip #2: Make To Do Lists

This can go hand in hand with Tip #1. As you set goals, make sure to list them out so as to not forget. Make sure not to try to do too much at one time, as many teachers do since there is so much to be done. Give yourself a maximum of 3-5 items on your to-do list to be done, be it goals, lesson plans, personal teaching aspirations, or student-based. Making lists, sticking to plans and being able to see your hard work in front of you will give you peace of mind at the end of a busy school day.

Tip #3: Keep Your Classroom Organized

Whether it is homework, group work or individual tests, make sure that you have an area for finished work, blank tests, and any spare paperwork or lesson plans you have out for your students. Keeping up with the mountains of paper that comes with testing, homework and lessons can be overwhelming so make sure to have a system in place so you don’t drown in paperwork at the end of the day.

Tip #4: Rethink Traditional Homework

Instead of giving out homework every day, which in turn gives the teacher a good amount of homework for themselves, try doing a weekly homework plan. You could also have the students read chapters from their books and have their parents or guardians sign off a reading log for that week. This way, the student will still get the appropriate amount of lessons at home and you won’t have to sit and grade for 10 extra hours a week.

Tip #5: Take Advantage of Any Extra Time

Make use of any added bonus time you get throughout the day, as it can add up so you have less to do the next day or less to do at home. If you students get done with a project early, have them read independently while you finish up a task or start a whole new one on your checklist. Maybe they are taking a test and you can go over a new lesson plan for the next week or finish up a task you hadn’t been able to get to. Little slivers of time can add up and give you big amounts of progress in your day.

Tip #6: Get an Edge with Technology

Utilize all technology at your disposal. Maybe there’s an online grading system you can do that streamlines homework. E-mail students in one go for the week’s lessons. Announcements, changes or new additions to the syllabus can be downloaded instead of printed out. Whatever tech the school offers, learn it and use it as much as you can to benefit you and your students. There are a good amount of students that feel more comfortable speaking through email or one on one when it comes to issues or questions in the class as well.

Tip #7: Don’t Expect Perfection Every Time

It’s okay to not know everything all the time. Teachers are amazing and hardworking, but you can’t plan for everything to go just as planned, or else you will lose much more time trying to fix what you didn’t plan for. Always have contingencies in place in case a project fails or a lesson plan flops. It’s okay to have to revise and edit your day.
